Traditional ao dai dresses.

Thomas Bradford

Allure of the Ao Dai

The national dress of Vietnamese women is the ao dai, alluring, beautiful, and provocative yet discreet. In 1744, the Nguyen dynasty, ruling central and southern Vietnam, dictated a change in dress towards the lines of the Chinese style. Buttoned coats and trousers replaced skirts and split coats tied in front. Emperor Minh Mang imposed the wearing of trousers for all women. In the 1930s, an artist from a liberal reform group attempted to modernise the Vietnamese woman’s dress through diversity in colour and design. His new creation of a longer coat used different materials and could even be bare-shouldered. His innovations evolved to become today’s ao dai.
